I’ve always struggled with what I wanted to do in my working life. At school, I had all these dreams of being successful, but what career? I love animals, so the first thing that came to mind was a veterinary nurse; all the furry cute animals that I could look after, nurse back to health and enjoy all the cuddles. Realising quickly that I wouldn’t want to put them to sleep if they were too ill to treat so that one was a no go!
Next was a beautician, I love make-up and so I went to college for a year studying beauty. I really enjoyed it until there were issues with tutors cancelling classes far too frequently. We would find out the class was cancelled once we had arrived on campus, no phone call prior. What a waste of everyone’s time and I certainly didn’t feel like I was getting very far, so I quit.
I should have listened to the careers adviser at secondary school when she said I would suit working in an office and organising paperwork. I was completely adamant I didn’t want to be cooped up in a stuffy office working 9-5. Growing up, I was always out in the fresh air as we had horses. My sister and I were always down the yard mucking out the stables, grooming, cleaning tack or out on hacks. I loved the farm, and to this day going past a yard smelling all those farmy smells brings it all back. What a great part of my life that was.
The careers adviser was right!
Okay, okay, the careers adviser was right. I love office work, I’m obsessed with organising and yes I am a stationery addict!
For the past 15 years, I have been an office administrator and this time has been spent in two office jobs. My most recent job is the same one I had for the last 13 years. Although I enjoyed my work, my personal life was changing and plans were being made. I also knew it was time for me to branch out and challenge myself a little more by going it alone as a business owner.
The best decision ever!
